Who I Am
Hello! My name is Mariana Calvo Boullosa and I am a freelance writer and photographer from Mexico City. Much of my work focuses on the themes of violence and displacement in Latin America. So far, I have published work with Latino USA, Latino Rebels, Roads and Kingdoms, Colombia Reports, America: The Jesuit Review, and Global Comment.

I am a Lewis Hine Fellow for the 2019-2020 year. The Lewis Hine Documentary Fellowship, is a program at Duke University's Center for Documentary Studies that connects the talents of young documentary artists with the resources and needs of community-based organizations, fosters unique collaborations and forges new paths for using media in the service of social justice.

I can be contacted at marianacalvo94@gmail.com or 919-695-2797.

What I Do

Here, I feature a selection of articles and photographs from my ongoing and previous work.

Under the Black Lives Matter tab, you will find photographs I made while covering protests in New York City as a response to the outcry over George Floyd's murder and broader issues of systemic racism.

Under the Family Reunification tab, you will find pictures I published with LatinoUSA and Latino Rebels about a program run by the Mexican state of Oaxaca that brings together undocumented immigrants with older relatives they have not been able to see for many years.

The Colombia tab features pictures I took while working as a reporter for Colombia Reports covering the environmental and humanitarian destruction caused by technical failures  at Hidroituango, Colombia's largest dam. This tab also features photographs of survivors of the Colombian conflict in order to shed light on the struggle to attain peace in a country still reeling from  the world's longest war.

The photos under the Lewis Hine tab are from an ongoing project funded through the Lewis Hine Fellowship about the experiences of formerly incarcerated people in the workforce.

The tab Bakery includes photographs I took of an almost entirely female bakery in Mexico City. These pictures are part of an ongoing project documenting the lived experiences of working women in Mexico.

And finally, the Read Me tab includes articles and long-term research projects I have published over the last several years.
